Interesting. Personally, I love all Luhrmann's films (including Moulin Rouge). I first saw Moulin Rouge with my wife, on its UK opening weekend, which happened to be the weekend after 9/11. After all that had happened that week, it was a perfect tonic of romance and musical madness that provided a delirious escape from the real world and all its horrors. We loved it so much we saw it twice on consecutive days (also, this is another film that absolutely has to be seen in the cinema to be properly appreciated). My second favourite film of 2001 (after The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring). :)
