Interesting. The truth is, I personally do believe in redemption but not for the reason Burgess gives. I don't believe growing older equates to necessarily putting aside violence, selfishness, childish things, etc. Age doesn't necessarily bring wisdom. So yes, I prefer the story without that bit.
