Interesting article. As a Brit, I've always found Top Gun rather absurd in its militaristic attitudes, though I enjoy the film as a guilty pleasure (I wrote this piece on it recently, if you're interested). I like the new film more than the original, overall (spoiler-free review here, again if you're interested). :)
