Interesting question. Historically, I started writing film reviews (around the year 2002) just because it was a damn sight easier than continually repeating my opinions when people asked what I thought of any given film. I would efficiently send round an email to friends with my review. It built from there to bigger audiences online.
With my fiction, I write because it's the only way to silence the voices in my head by putting them on paper. But my biggest motivation - in all my writing - is to entertain. Nothing deeper.
In the writing process, I find comfort and catharsis (particularly when writing horror) and also challenge. So I suppose I write for myself as well as to entertain, arguably.
