Interesting reflections. I'm not sure economics ever were a factor in our decision to have children. We knew we'd take a significant financial hit by doing so, but we did it regardless, as I don't think there is ever an "ideal" time to start. It is always going to be messy in many ways (not just financial).
Our children are now 20 and 15, and quite honestly, the idea of life without them is unthinkable. But of course I'd say that. And obviously, I fully respect anyone's decision not to have children. It is none of my business. :)
