It almost happened with Hook, if you look at the production history. I don't much care for Hook as a film, but the music is outstanding, possibly due to how long John Williams had to work on it (three of the songs are in the finished cut).

Then of course there's that fabulous Williams remix of Cole Porter's Anything Goes at the start of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. :)
