It certainly isn't a love story.

…t deeply unsettling. In fact in parts I would go so far as to say it positively made my skin crawl. When I encounter people (in the flesh or in print) who wax lyrical about the beauty of this novel, about it being a love story, I genuinely feel nauseous — so Alisson Wood’s book was certainly a difficult thing to read, but extremely rewarding too.

It certainly isn't a love story. It's about destructive, self-delusional lustful obsession. Immensely unsettling, I quite agree. I can't understand why anyone would see it as a love story.
