It had some pretty damning reviews at the time, very unfairly in my view. Critics are kinder to it now. To be fair, it is a ludicrously overheated and melodramatic film; very much a blunt instrument, but a very effective one. The cinematography is absolutely stunning, and the menacing, unsettling atmosphere throughout really gets under the skin. Plus Mickey Rourke has never been better, in my opinion. To be honest, I loved it and still love it, because it is so visceral.
