It's been a while since I saw it, but I'm with Paul on this.

… a reason. They lack broad appeal. They have a niche market. They are often products of their time. Vanishing Point is a cult movie aimed at stoners and car enthusiasts. The counter-culture themes of rebellion, sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll haven’t aged too well.

It's been a while since I saw it, but I'm with Paul on this. I did enjoy it, and think it has a bit more going for it than you give it credit for. But I'd need to see it again to properly reassess.
