It's much better because of the lack of CGI.

…azis and the evil, greedy archaeologist, Belloq (Paul Freeman) open the Ark, I still close my eyes. The sight of faces melting and heads exploding — even pre-CGI — still gives me nightmares. Raiders of the Lost Ark isn’t my favorite Indiana Jones film, but it reeled me in and hooked me.

It's much better because of the lack of CGI. Practical effects done well trumps CGI every time. And yes - this one is my favourite. :)
