It's only sin? This film has more than one sin, and they are significant sins.
I'm not saying everyone involved didn't try, but Lynch was the wrong person for Dune (I like every one of his other films). The cast is great too, but they are wasted (although Sting has never been much of an actor).
The biggest problem with Lynch's Dune isn't special effects but the screenplay, for all the reasons I mention in this article. So much of the greatness and essence of the novel is missed and replaced with ponderous nonsense, or else silly changes ("weirding modules"), or unnecessarily nasty changes (the heart plug sequence). The Baron is reduced to a leering pantomime villain with none of his cunning and scheming. To quote Leonard Maltin, it is joyless, oppressive, and dull.
The Villeneuve films, in contrast, are quite spectacular and wonderful. :)
