It's utterly ordinary compared to 2001. I didn't like it really, especially the deeply dull explanation for HAL's malfunction (contradictory programming). My theories (including the one I expound on in this post) are far more interesting. Kubrick left it ambiguous for a reason, because the question is better than the answer. I typically refer to 2010 as "ten past eight". :)
