I've actually never been to a drive-in cinema in my life (I'm in the UK and they aren't really a thing here) so can't comment from that perspective. But I've never liked the idea - as you say, tinny speaker, watching through car windshield, etc.
I actually don't believe cinemas can compare with the home viewing experience, because 1) not all of us have the money for expensive home sound systems/bigger screens or 2) the space/acoustic requirements for them or 3) the ability to turn the volume up to the required levels without annoying neighbours.
Also, for me going to the cinema isn't just about the size of the screen and the sound (although that is a hugely significant factor). I go into my views more on the subject here, if you're interested. I accept that I'm a bit of an old-school hardliner extremist on this one, and mean no disrespect to your views at all. :)
