I’ve never cared for Last Tango in Paris. It’s a pretty horrid film. But to be clear, nor do I favour banning or suppressing anything. I’m anti censorship to the marrow of my bones.
As for the critics, they’re entitled to their opinions I suppose. But a film review is not a blood oath, and it’s smart to accept if and when one’s opinion changes over time, rather than pridefully cling to an original verdict. I wrote a piece a while back about films that I changed my mind about.
As for Bertolucci, he’s made better films (such as The Conformist). Regarding The Last Emperor, I think it’s a fairly interesting film, but I’d have given Best Picture that year to The Untouchables. :)
