I've not read the book, so it's interesting to hear that's not in it.

Harrison was not invol…— the novel’s equivalent character, under a different name, is just as important as the detective. (The other major difference is the famous revelation near the end about Soylent Green itself, completely absent from the book. Harrison was not involved in the movie, and didn’t like it much.)
