Just a brief point of order from a Tolkien nerd: Shelob is female. Also, she is the last child of Ungoliant, the great spider from The Silmarillion. Other spawn of Ungoliant are found in Mirkwood in The Hobbit, but, as Tolkien writes, none could rival Shelob, and (from memory) it is implied Shelob is their ancestral mother.
