Kurosawa's shot compositions are indeed superb and filled with meaning.

The movement of the sword in the photo significantly heightens its importance. Indeed, all elements of the image are arranged to emphasize this point prominently and strikingly. The black vertical spears on the right are much more dynamic than Kikuchiyo’s sword, but the sword, in motion, is much more noticeable and prominent in the context it holds in the film. The samurai’s sword carries an aspect of supernatural power within it.

Kurosawa's shot compositions are indeed superb and filled with meaning. I'm a huge fan of Seven Samurai, and intend to write an article celebrating this masterpiece early next year. :)
