Leaving aside all scientific stuff, and going purely on my personal taste, I do agree that some single malt whisky benefits from have a few drops of water dropped in to bring out the flavours in the manner you describe. But I prefer Lagavulin as it is.
On a more general point, I'm not a snob about drinking whisky with water. But ice is a bridge too far for me. And anything else (eg coke) is simply blasphemy. :)
