Look at it this way: See Part I so we get a Part II. It's for the greater good. Also it looks amazing on a big screen, and will be severely reduced on television.

I wouldn't say it ends abruptly, but it does end very much on a "to be continued" note - again, much like The Fellowship of the Ring in that respect (though as per the article, I refuse to compare the two stories).
