Lots of people defend Hook, but I think that comes from childhood nostalgia. Objectively speaking, I don’t think it works as a film. Certainly it is far better on stage. I saw an astonishing production at the age of 7 in 1982, at the Barbican theatre in London, which had Joss Ackland as Captain Hook. It didn’t compromise on any of the rough edges of JM Barrie’s text (unlike Hook), and I still think that crocodile was real.
