My children are very wise to this. They view a lot of modern mainstream Hollywood production with a Mount Everest of cynicism as a result, and in turn tend to revisit older films more and more. These days, it isn't uncommon in our house for one of them to pick up, say, the Sergio Leone Dollars trilogy, or Mad Max, or whatever, and say: "Fancy watching some toxic masculinity?" And by the way, they love The Terminator, Aliens, etc, so your point about those is spot-on.
