My children have never had that problem. They have always loved, say, the Ray Harryhausen films. And they love the original Godzilla too. Obviously, the effects are dated, but that's part of the fun and charm. And I still think sometimes, a man in a suit or stop motion is the best choice in any case. Would the Jason and the Argonauts skeleton army really look better in smooth but fake CGI? Would the hairy Hoth Wampa costume used in The Empire Strikes Back really be better in CGI? I don't think so. Physical effects are often the right choice, even with CGI as an option - as was the case with The Empire Strikes Back (the new man-in-costume Wampa shots were filmed in 1997 for the 20th anniversary rerelease). :)
