My father found that scene almost unbearably moving, because he faced a similar situation with his father who wanted him to be a doctor (my father studied English instead and became a teacher). But I also see how this scene would work on a metaphorical level regarding being gay.

Incidentally, it's one of three times I saw my father cry at a film (the other two occasions were It's a Wonderful Life and Schindler's List, though he told me he cried the first time he saw Shane).
