My personal take on this debate is that yes, some studio product is shamelessly commercial and not designed to make you think, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t be art, of a kind. I’d argue, for instance, that the most recent Mission Impossible film represents a high watermark for action movie filmmaking. It moves from exhilarating set piece to exhilarating set piece with such thrilling dexterity that even the plot ceases to matter particularly.
On the other hand, I admire filmmakers of genuine ambition that seek to work within the mainstream studio system to entertain, but at the same time not dumb down big ideas. Christopher Nolan is a case in point.
And yes, I will go and see every film with the aforementioned stellar prefixes.
