My selections were based on films I’d happily sit through again from time to time. The Last Temptation of Christ isn’t one of my favourites, to be honest. However it is undeniably a well-acted, directed, and interesting piece of work, with a few missteps (not sure about talking lions or Bowie as Pontius Pilate). Yes, it was controversial (the evangelical church I attended at the time spoke out against it), though I do believe the film is not intentionally blasphemous, despite the many liberties taken with the gospel accounts. After all, Jesus dies on the cross and fulfils his mission at the end of the film, when it is revealed the sequences of him coming down from the cross, making love to Mary Magdelene, having a family, and so on, are all in his head as a “last temptation”.

But yes, I’d much rather watch Goodfellas or Mean Streets again. :)
