My teenage children comment (with great cynicism) on this vicious cycle of misery, though not their misery - the misery of their friends, for whom they feel genuine sympathy. I should add that both my children refuse to have any social media. This is not something my wife and I demanded. In both cases it was their choice. I'd like to say its down to mine and my wife's parental wisdom, but in truth I think they saw the horrors around them and decided they want no part in it. I can only hope others follow their example. #proudparent (Yes, I'm fully aware of the irony of me as their parent using a hashtag, as unlike them I do have social media, but according to my children in my case that's OK, because I have novels to plug.)
