My two pennies worth: There are five slots in the Best Director category, and all five are thoroughly deserving. Greta Gerwig's work on Barbie simply isn't in the same league (although I loved her take on Little Women - that one did deserve a Best Director nomination). Then again, I wouldn't have nominated Barbie for Best Picture either. I'd have gladly given Barbie's spot to Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret instead.

On a more general note, I do agree there's a bit of a disconnect between the Best Director and Best Picture category at times. Perhaps it would be best to expand the list to up to ten directors, and any nomination for Best Picture automatically gets a Best Director nomination.
