OK, I had a feeling you meant Electronic and I should have just said Electronic without the Joy Division essay, but my OCD sense of full-explanation in the event of not being properly understood (which my wife tells me is probably autism spectrum related but will make people think I'm being patronising) caught me out on this occasion. I had my suspicions it was unwise and I am sincerely sorry for patronising you.
During the late 1980s, the Holy Trinity of music for me was The Smiths (not very commercial, but became revered in retrospect), New Order (mostly uncommercial but the odd top ten single smash like True Faith, Regret, Blue Monday, and their football themed World in Motion - their only UK number one), and Pet Shop Boys (not so well known in the US, but massively commercial in the UK, loads of number one singles, top ten singles throughout the 80s, 90s, and well into the 2000s, and whilst they aren't in the top ten much these days, are still going, believe it or not - practically a national institution here in the UK).
