One of my all-time favourite films (let alone all-time favourite horror films).

The Innocents (1961). I had somehow never seen this film until reading Simon Dillon’s 60th anniversary piece about it a few years ago. An adaptation of Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw, it is similar to The Haunting of Hill House in that you’re never quite sure whether the ghosts are real or simply in the protagonist’s mind. There are several terrifying moments that make me sure it is the former. Deborah Kerr is quite simply amazing in the lead role.
