One of the reasons I prefer Raiders: Indy is a darker character. In one sense he's just as obsessed, twice abandoning Marion because of the Ark. He's a much more straightforward hero in subsequent films.

And Belloq is still my favourite villain from Indiana Jones: A slimy collaborating Frenchman.
