Personally, I don't think every film needs an "edge" to be great. For instance, Mary Poppins is a masterpiece (radically different from the books, but great in it's own right) and I'll have choice words for anyone who says otherwise.

But it simply isn't true to say Disney hasn't made anything with a hint of an edge. Consider the following: The Black Hole, The Journey of Natty Gann, The Black Cauldron, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Dragonslayer, and that's without even mentioning the darker elements in films from the classic era: The forest hallucinations in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the death of Bambi's mother in Bambi, the appearance of Satan and his demons in Fantasia... I could go on?

One point I do agree on: Disney needs to stay the hell away from any creative decisions in Doctor Who. :)
