Rain Man and Born on the Fourth of July are both superb, and Cruise was amazing in both. Plus he was brilliant in Magnolia and (as you quite rightly point out here) Collateral. He's an actor of far greater range than he generally gets credit for, certainly well beyond the Top Gun/Mission: Impossible heroics for which he is most associated.
