Regarding your broader question about "offensive" books being published, that's rather a can of worms, as it depends who gets to decide what is "offensive". I certainly don't believe in censorship, and my perception (from here in the UK) is that vast swathes of American readers have lost the ability to distinguish between depicting something and endorsing something.
