Regarding your choices:

The Hunger Games - I prefer the novel.

The Martian - Both equally good.

The Princess Diaries - I liked the film, I haven't read the book.

I've actually not seen or read the last two on your list.

What are my favourite adaptations? I've an article dedicated to this question that I think you might enjoy, but the most obvious better-than-the-novel examples that leap to mind are Jaws and The Godfather. :)
