Some thoughts from me on this:

1. I definitely agree the Harry Potter novels are superior to the films.

2. I disagree on The Hunger Games. I like the film, but I prefer the novel (even more so with the later instalments).

3. I agree that Rosamund Pike is superb, as is Gone Girl as a whole. When I saw it in a (packed) cinema, I was the only one laughing at the dark vein of satirical humour. Gillian Flynn says she deliberately made the film version funnier, but perhaps not everyone shares our twisted sense of humour.

4. Jurassic Park. Again, I agree. Spielberg's version is much better. I enjoy Michael Crichton's writing most of the time, but Spielberg's instincts to tweak this novel were right. I first saw the film during the original 1993 run in a packed THX screen cinema, and it completely blew me away. I will never forget it. In a weird way, it was a kind of landmark that signalled the end of both my childhood (I turned 18 that summer), and the golden era of Spielberg/Lucas, whose films I had grown up with.

5. I've always been a huge fan of James Bond, and I agree Casino Royale is terrific. In fact, I consider it the best Bond film since On Her Majesty's Secret Service in 1969 (which also featured Bond in love). I still prefer Connery's films, but only just.

6. The Shining. Agreed completely. It isn't the book, but Kubrick didn't just trash it for no reason. He reinvented it, creating something better. On that subject, you might enjoy this piece I wrote a while ago, which also touches on The Shining.
