Here in the UK, I think the law is a bit different concerning such matters, but there have been compulsory purchases for other reasons (eg building airport runways) and that is always controversial.

To the matter at hand, I agree the oil pipeline business is seriously messed up, and I have particular sympathy for the character in the film who loses his land because of it.
