I don't agree that a film can go straight to "classic" as the word itself implies age. I think "great" also implies age, though that could be debated. But leaving aside semantics, I do think however obvious a film might be as an "instant classic", the ten year rule is a proper way to test it. So if I see a new film I consider a masterpiece, in my review, I typically remark to the effect that future generations may consider it great, or something like that.
