That may be so, but its a dull explanation (though obviously it can be interpreted that way). I was particularly annoyed when the (vastly inferior) 2010 attempted to answer the question in the same manner. I much prefer Kubrick's ambiguity, which allows for my theories. In this case, the question is better than the answer. :)
