That sounds absolutely maddening. I feel your pain. Google damn well ought to sort this out. And I say that as a stuck-up Queen's English Brit. People should have the option to write in their own regional variants (though God forbid a Brit should write in "American" - that's an offence worth of imprisonment in the Tower of London).
