Hitchcock was hardly a feminist, but I do think he wrote interesting, complex female characters, and that's certainly true of this film. It's also particularly true of Vertigo, which either accidentally or deliberately is saying a lot of fascinating things about how men often fashion women into their perception of who they are, stripping them of their true identity. I'd argue it's even, probably unconsciously, a little bit self-critical in that respect. Either way, it's a masterpiece.
