That's not true. I disagree a lot more than 1000 percent. ;)
I'll say this for the original release: It is the first version I ever saw, and even in this damaged goods cut, I could see this was a masterpiece. But the director's cut and final cut versions are superior. I prefer to bask in the silences where the voiceover appears, and frankly, I prefer to be left with my own thoughts, profound or otherwise. It was rendered deliberately badly, so Ford claims, in the hope it wouldn't be used.
Then there's that dreadful happy ending cobbled together from outtakes from the opening of The Shining; entirely out of keeping with the rest of the film, nonsensically plotted, and sticks out like a sore thumb. No. No. No. Give me unicorn dream ambiguity any day over this.
