The difference between seeing a film in the cinema in an immersive environment compared with seeing a film on streaming is vast. Cinema
is far better. For me, that’s a hill I will die on.
I don’t see the issue as comparable with how one reads a book, as unlike cinema the experience is identical (though I always prefer physical media). Whereas one would have to be wilfully obtuse to suggest watching Lawrence of Arabia or 2001: A Space Odyssey in 70mm on a huge cinema screen is in any way comparable to watching it on television. It’s simply not the same experience. It’s like saying looking at a postcard of the Sistine Chapel is the same as visiting the Sistine Chapel.
Speaking for myself, I have many, many cherished memories of films seen in the cinema. Some of these are for films I initially saw on television but later saw at the cinema during rereleases in their original glory.
