The Fellowship of the Ring opening monologue works because it shows rather than tells. You see the forging of the Rings, the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, Sauron's defeat, Isildur taking the Ring, Gollum finding it, etc, etc, amid Galadriel's narration. It's easy to follow. By contrast, the Irulan narration is ponderous and leaps from subject to subject info-dumping, with no visual underlay, just her face to camera.
The Sci-Fi Channel TV series was OK; faithful but unremarkable. I think Dune needs the cinema, and Villeneuve has finally done it justice. :)
