The obvious one that leaps to mind is the Powell/Pressburger masterpiece A Matter of Life and Death. British air force pilot David Niven is supposed to die in a plane crash during World War II, but due to a clerical error winds up surviving. He flits in and out of the afterlife (rather subversively, the afterlife sequences are monochrome, the Earth sequences in vibrant colour), and winds up in a surreal heavenly trial to decide whether he should stay in heaven or go back to Earth (to the love of his life, Kim Hunter, with whom he fell in love over the radio as his plane plummeted to the ground). It's one of my all-time favourites. :)
