The Outsiders is a very good film, and I've always thought that. Good point about the voice of critics being amplified by nitwits online. Sometimes, critics have not been reasonable in the past (to put it mildly). Their initial assessments of everything from Citizen Kane to The Night of the Hunter, Vertigo, Ryan's Daughter, Barry Lyndon, and Blade Runner leap to mind. All full blown masterpieces to anyone with eyes in their heads, as far as I'm concerned.
On top of that, to further your point, I do recall a certain snootiness in reviews for Spielberg's output post E.T. and pre-Jurassic Park. Perhaps critics thought he'd been too successful and wanted to cut him down to size, but there was far too much nonsense written about The Color Purple and Empire of the Sun - both much underrated films, to my mind.
I shall take a look at the You Tube people you've recommended. :)
