The Renoir comparison is interesting. Personally, I didn't think this was intended as a particularly serious critique or satire of the upper classes, but in fact a knowingly overripe Tom Ripley-eseque gothic melodrama. As such, I confess despite the portfolio of deeply unpleasant characters, I thoroughly enjoyed this.
