The sequels aren't in the same league at all. Fun to a point, but a pale shadow of the original. I always interpreted the ending of the original as a joke - it seems appropriate that Marty et al go off to another adventure, but it hardly matters what it is (and Zemeckis confirmed as much in interviews, deciding only later to tie it in with the sequels).
