To say that rival nations were jealous of Spain during this time is a massive understatement. Spain’s rivals could not beat them economically or militarily, so they turned to lies and propaganda, not unlike what still happens today. England’s Queen Elizabeth I was especially keen to denigrate the Spanish in any way she could.

Then there was the Spanish Armada, of course. On paper we shouldn't have won that one, but damn... Yes, it may be hundreds of years ago, but rule Brittania, and all that. ;)
