There are Neanderthals with contempt for intellect here too, believe me. But I think they aren't politically weaponised the way they are in the US. For instance, our greatest recent political schism (Brexit) had supporters of low and high intellect on both sides of the argument. But I do think poverty, classism, and the rich/poor divide are a problem here too (racism is a far lesser issue than in the US, though still an issue in some places).
As a nation, the UK sits somewhat awkwardly in a tug of war between a more right-leaning US and a more progressive European/Scandinavian mindset. It's a curious halfway house of sorts, moderated by a constitutional monarchy. We do have many problems, but I'm inclined to think at least we don't have gun culture and we do have state funded healthcare for all.
On the other hand, the US has buffalo wings and Key Lime pie. Just typing those words makes my mouth water. :) Despite the problems in America at present, I'm actually very pro-US, in the best possible sense of the sentiment, because I believe a strong US is in the world's best interests, and there are some good things in the US constitution. I accept that America is always going to be ruled by a more extreme form of capitalism than what we are used to in the UK, but that's no reason not to deal with issues like racism and gun culture properly. If there is the political will, it can be done. I'm rooting for you all.
I also refute the stereotype of "stupid Americans" purely because I know a lot of Americans, and they are, almost without exception, intelligent, witty, erudite, well-read, and thoughtful people. (You, for instance.)
