There have always been outrages of various kinds throughout the decades, whether from moral crusaders like Mary Whitehouse or from extremists of various kinds today. I've always regarded such things with suspicious apathy because I despise authoritarian political/social extremism, but despite such apathy (supposedly a Generation X trait, of which I am a proud member), I can tell you I did speak up and actively fought against film censorship in the UK. The battle has essentially been won now, as adults are more or less permitted to choose their own entertainment within the law (see this article for more details), but I do believe the modern manifestation of "cancel culture" is particularly insidious due to the internet providing platforms for extremist loonies to come together, form Inquisitional gangs, and affirm their delusional nonsense (on all sides of the various professionally offended debates). That's why these groups often feel like majorities when they are in fact minorities, and that is why, for the good of my health, I limit my online activities. It is not the real world.
